Day 15 - (day 3 of the 10 day wait) - Randell's Post

Sunday, January 2, 2010

We have heard so many other families refer to the days here to be like being in the movie “Groundhog Day”, and we now know what they mean. Everyday is the same: wake up, go visit Andrei, come home, walk to town and eat lunch, come home, sit, eat dinner, sit and then go to bed…..wake up, repeat…. As much fun as it has been to be here, and visit with Andrei, we are ready to take him out of the orphanage and go home. We miss home and are ready to see our daughter and get back to our normal routine. We miss our deep fried foods, worthless TV shows and ice! I don’t think there is a single ice cube in this entire country! Ok…enough whining.
Here are some pictures of our visit today. He had a little fit today when we started cleaning up the playdoh. You wouldn’t think a child would want to clean up by himself, but he does. We were helping him and he started yelling “sam” pronounced “sum” in Russian, which means ‘myself”. His favorite word, and then threw everything on the floor. We made him pick it up and then tried to explain to him that it’s ok if mom and dad help sometimes. We like his independence, but he takes it to the extreme sometimes.

We usually carry him back to his group after our visit, but today he wanted to “walk” back and go up the stairs by himself. I was pretty amazed at what I saw. He ceases to amaze us with what he can do on his twisted feet and legs so thin they look like they would break if you touched them. Another reason we want to get home. If he can do all of these things with what he has to work with, just think what he can do when his feet are straight and his body is properly nourished. It’s hard to imagine that he has never been out of the walls of that orphanage in three and half years. We are so excited for him, and anxious to show him the world. We are so thankful the Lord has allowed us to have this opportunity.

  2. Hi Guys! I have empathy for you on wanting to come home. Mark, Lydia, and I were so ready to get on American soil by about day 15 also. I kept thinking about how we could go home to familiar sights and smells, but Julia would never have that. We ate jiouxa (dumplings) for dinner the other night and Julia was oohing and aahing about how good they were. She was so happy to have that familiarity around her again. I'm so looking forward to meeting Andrei in person when the time is right for him. He will be happy, but overwhelmed at all the new sights and sounds. Hang in there! We're praying for you! Blessings, Michelle G.

  3. Wow, he is getting along great! Your ice cube whine cracked me up.

Apparently Americans are very into ICE. :)

We flew Air France and they were serving soft drinks minus the ice. I asked for ice and was given 1 small cube. LOL

Mike learned when they offered drinks, to just ask for a cup of ice. :)

  4. That's so amazing! He sure is independent! I have a theory that all the kids with arthrogryposis are that way. :) Mine always says, "I do it Laelia's self." :) Hoping you get him home soon!
